For all you Ed Rendell sheep out there, remember you asked for this. In the latest attempt to feed his habit for our hard earned money, Governor Fast Eddie Rendell now wants to make every single interstate highway in Pennsylvania a toll road not just for revenue, but to make it “more fair” for The Pennsylvania Turnpike to compete.
If you think that people try to avoid Pennsylvania now, think of how they will avoid it after Fast Eddie starts collecting his Toll House Cookies from your wallet. I wrote an article a while back supporting the idea of Toll Highways as the future toward generating highway revenue, however I would only support it if the state’s gasoline tax was phased out in the process. The way this stands I can not support this measure. Without the gasoline tax being phased out, and with toll highways in the process will continue to chase out industry and continue to harm our economy. It has to be either a gasoline tax, or tolls, but not both. One of the biggest problems in government in general is that we have so many forms of taxation from income, property, sales, and so on. We need not just a more reasonable tax system, but one that is more direct. One tax, and one route to fund our government is what we need. I for one would prefer paying a 15% toward a progressive income tax system in exchange of getting rid of gasoline taxes, sales taxes, the ems tax, real estate transfer tax, and so on. Delaware has been leaning toward this trend for quite a few years now with success.
